Apple set to introduce AI-powered AirPods and sunglasses, competing directly with Meta

Apple’s Upcoming AI Product Launches

Apple is preparing to unveil a range of new products, notably AirPods and smart glasses with integrated cameras and AI features. This move positions Apple squarely within the competitive landscape of AI devices, going head-to-head with Meta’s AI-powered camera sunglasses.

The new AirPods are seen as a significant advancement in what Apple refers to as visual intelligence, a technology designed to analyze images and provide immediate context. According to reports, these AI-enhanced earbuds will closely resemble the current AirPod Pro models but will include a small camera embedded in the stem.

Interestingly, this camera won’t be used for taking photos or videos. Instead, it functions as a sensor, enhancing Siri’s ability to provide visual context, like improving navigation with turn-by-turn walking directions.

As for the smart glasses, which are expected to launch around late 2027, they have the codename N50 and will compete with offerings from Meta, incorporating more refined cameras capable of capturing photos and videos.

Meta has faced criticisms for its AI and camera technology, particularly with Ray-Ban and Oakley sunglasses being misused by some individuals to record unsuspecting women, raising serious privacy concerns.

In response, there are growing warnings from privacy advocates regarding the hazards linked to wearable AI devices. However, Apple seems to be addressing these issues by equipping its AI AirPods with external lights that alert those nearby when data is being sent to the cloud.

These new AirPods are designed to be Apple’s inaugural AI-focused wearable device. The anticipated launch will align with the debut of next-generation foldable phones and new iPhone models, highlighting the 20th anniversary of the product line.

Reports suggest that Apple is gearing up to make these upcoming product announcements their most significant to date.

Meta’s smart glasses previously featured capabilities for taking photos and videos, while the inclusion of AI offers additional interactivity, allowing users to answer questions or respond via text or voice. Apple has highlighted visual intelligence as a core feature in the refreshed Siri and iOS 27, integrating it into the Camera app to help users inquire about objects in their vicinity, like asking what to make for dinner based on visible ingredients.

This AirPods initiative is a key part of Apple’s broader strategy to venture deeper into AI-powered hardware.

Additionally, Apple is in the process of developing an AI-focused pendant with a camera, wearable as either a necklace or attached to clothing. However, it’s likely not the same type of device that manipulates space and time like in an episode of “Black Mirror.”

These product launches could provide a significant boost for John Ternas, marking his first full year as CEO following his appointment in September.

Originally, the AirPods, codenamed B798, were set for a 2026 release. However, Apple’s ongoing challenges in developing AI software have led to notable delays, necessitating the creation of a visual AI model capable of identifying objects in a user’s environment.
