Long Island Architect Sentenced for Multiple Murders
A Long Island architect who obscured a series of murders behind the facade of a family life has received a death sentence for the killing of eight women.
Rex Heuerman, aged 62, residing in Massapequa Park, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on June 17 in a Riverhead court. He pleaded guilty in April to three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder. Additionally, during a deposition, he acknowledged his involvement in the death of Karen Vergata, the eighth victim, though he was not formally charged for that murder.
Judge Timothy Mazzei imposed three consecutive life sentences for the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. He also assigned four consecutive terms of 25 years to life for the killings of Maureen Brainard Burns, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack. This totals a life expectancy of 100 years, which aligns with the plea agreement Heuerman reached in April.
The court heard statements from approximately 10 to 15 relatives of the victims before the sentence was announced. Following the judge’s remarks, the audience reportedly erupted in applause. Mazzei did not hide his contempt, expressing the need for sympathy towards the eight women Heuerman strangled, labeling the defendant as a coward.
Prosecutors worked rigorously against Heuerman, revealing documents he created that detailed how to select, kill, and dispose of victims, even indicating the bodies’ location as garbage dumps. District Attorney Raymond Tierney remarked in court that “eight young women were needlessly and brutally murdered by this defendant.”
The murders are believed to have commenced with a strangulation in 1993 and continued until 2010. Heuerman was arrested in July 2023 following a thorough investigation by the police.
Initially, Heuerman maintained his innocence after his arrest but shifted his stance this spring. Investigators connected him to the victims through DNA and burner phone records and are looking into the possibility of his involvement in additional cases.
