18-year-old tourist dies in horse-drawn carriage accident in Central Park, NYC

Tragic Accident in Central Park

An 18-year-old man lost his life on Wednesday when a horse-drawn carriage spooked, leading to a collision with another carriage in New York City’s Central Park. This incident took place near West 72nd Street and West Drive close to Cherry Hill, as reported by the Central Park Conservancy.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that an investigation is ongoing regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Romansh Mahajan, visiting from India, sustained fatal injuries after he fell from the carriage during the incident. According to officials, the carriage he was on broke free and sped down West Drive before crashing into another carriage, which resulted in it overturning near Tavern on the Green.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene. Reports indicated that Mahajan was in critical condition when taken to a local hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive.

A representative from the Central Park Conservancy expressed their profound sadness over his death, stating, “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this unimaginable time.”

Details surrounding what caused the horse’s panic remain unclear. Nevertheless, the tragic event has reignited discussions about the safety of the horse-drawn carriage industry in New York City. Both the union that represents carriage drivers and the Central Park Conservation Group are now calling for changes in regulations.

Alexander Kemp from TWU Local 100 suggested that preliminary findings indicate the carriage driver may have momentarily left the horse to take photos, which is deemed unacceptable as safety should always take priority.

The union has voiced its support for a thorough investigation and emphasizes the necessity for improved driver training and stricter regulations regarding new horses entering the industry.

The Central Park Conservancy has long advocated against horse-drawn carriages, and this incident has amplified their concerns about public safety within the park. A spokesperson mentioned, “This is the tragedy we feared last year. A young man lost his life coming to enjoy our parks, which is an unacceptable price for an outdated industry.”

This incident marks the eighth horse-related accident in Central Park in the past year, raising significant alarm among safety advocates. In light of this, there’s a renewed push for the passage of the Rider Act, aimed at banning horse-drawn carriages and providing alternative job placements for drivers.

In a related event, just days before this accident, another carriage horse collapsed while pulling tourists, highlighting ongoing issues within the industry.

The NYPD and TWU Local 100 have been contacted for additional comments regarding the situation.
