Giants-Braves game postponed again, rescheduled for August

Giants’ Trip to Atlanta Cut Short by Rain

In a rather unusual turn of events, the Giants found themselves in Atlanta for four days and only managed to play one baseball game.

As the tropical storm approached, bringing with it severe weather, the planned three-game series with the Braves concluded similarly to how it began—canceled due to rain.

The final game has been rescheduled for August 31st, with the first pitch now slated for 6:05 PM ET.

This day marks one of three off days the team will have left for the remainder of the season. Interestingly, the Giants were initially set to travel from San Francisco to kick off their road trip against the Pirates and Mets, while the Braves are in the midst of a homestand, enjoying a day off two days later.

The last game of this series saw rain starting the moment it was allowed to begin. It was called off after just one and a half innings, and this occurred before the originally scheduled 7:15 PM start—a stark contrast to the first game of the series, which experienced a nearly two-hour weather delay.

In that case, both teams managed to squeeze in a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Giants certainly capitalized, winning both games decisively. But scheduling a day game to escape weather issues isn’t exactly straightforward.

Next weekend, the Braves will head to San Francisco, but agreeing to a doubleheader there could disrupt Atlanta’s valuable home game schedule. For the Giants, making progress in Atlanta will carry its own set of challenges.

The new schedule requires the Giants to play 23 games in just as many days, which could definitely stress an already stretched pitching staff.

In terms of immediate effects from the rain-outs, every member of the Giants’ rotation will see their schedule shifted by a day. Landen Loup, originally set to pitch the series finale on Thursday, will now take the mound in Game 1 against the Marlins on Friday, followed by Trevor McDonald and Logan Webb.

Looking ahead, the National Hurricane Center warns Atlanta could receive up to four inches of rain from Tuesday afternoon through Friday night. While the worst of the weather is expected to hit Thursday, only a few drops were falling by the time the game’s cancellation was announced.
