Excitement Builds at Lumen Field for World Cup Match

SEATTLE — Lumen Field stands out as one of the loudest stadiums in the world. In fact, Seattle might just be the most soccer-enthusiastic city in the country.

On Friday, a historic match is on the horizon as the U.S. national team prepares to take on Australia for a shot at first place in Group D during the World Cup.

“We’re definitely expecting a very loud crowd, and their energy will pump us up,” said Cristian Roldan. “This stadium has seen some intense noise levels from Seahawks and Sounders games. I really think Seattle will show up strong to support us.”

“Seattle’s soccer culture has deep roots. It’s been around for a while now, much like in Vancouver and Portland. When you look closer, the scene here is fantastic. Playing soccer in this city means a lot to us, and I can’t wait for everyone to witness what we have to offer,” he added.

Roldan is currently practicing at the University of Washington with the U.S. team and plays for the Seattle Sounders, which regularly hosts the largest and noisiest crowds in MLS.

The passion for soccer in the city goes back long before MLS, reaching back to the days of the Sounders in the NASL. And Lumen, known for its remarkable acoustics, has had this reputation even before soccer became a fixture there, thanks to the Seahawks.

“That’s what I’ve been told, but I’ve never played here,” said Sergiño Dest. “I hope it lives up to the hype. That noise can unsettle the opponent a bit, which will definitely work in our favor. It’s going to be a fantastic match.”

Lumen Field is renowned worldwide for its sound. At one point, it even held the title for the loudest venue.

This is due not only to the passionate fans but also to clever engineering. Many will be there on Friday to cheer for the U.S., creating an electric atmosphere.

The unique roof design of Lumen allows sounds to echo and amplify. It previously held a Guinness World Record in noise levels—137.6 decibels, similar to the roar of a jet engine—which famously led to a seismic event known as the “Beast Quake” during a thrilling Seahawks game.

Using concrete and aluminum sheeting enhances the sound’s reverberation throughout the stadium. Plus, with the seating being close to the field and a large canopy acting like a parabolic mirror, the noise funnels right onto the playing area.

This is the sonic power that the U.S. hopes to unleash against Australia.

“Roldan always praises this fantastic fan base,” noted Weston McKennie. “It’s a huge community of supporters here, and I’m looking forward to experiencing that. I haven’t played with the national team at this venue before. I just hope it rivals or even exceeds the atmosphere at SoFi.”

“Even before games, when I hear the anthem and the crowd singing along, it gives me chills. It’s like, ‘Alright, it’s time to get going.’ Knowing you have that support drives you. When you’re feeling tired, and you hear that cheer after a tackle, it’s a real rush of adrenaline.”

The cheers are sure to be deafening, and the United States is counting on that to spark their performance.
