Sentencing of Long Island Serial Killer Rex Heuerman
On Friday, Asa Ellerup, the ex-wife of convicted serial killer Rex Heuerman, expressed through her attorney that she felt the 62-year-old architect “got what he deserved” after a New York judge imposed the maximum sentence for a series of murders committed between 1993 and 2010.
Bob Macedonio, Ellerup’s lawyer, stated, “She believes the sentence was appropriate for his crimes, and clearly he got what he deserved. You can’t kill eight people. She’ll never let that happen.” He mentioned that Heuerman has yet to contact Ellerup or their children since his transfer from Suffolk County Jail.
Initially held at Greenhaven Correctional Facility in Stormville, New York, it’s unclear where Heuerman will ultimately serve his sentence.
Ellerup made headlines recently for revealing in a Peacock documentary series, “Gilgo Beach Killer: Secret House,” that she sleeps in the same room where Heuerman tortured and murdered seven of his eight victims. “The brutal truth is that Rex Heuerman said he disinterred bodies in this room,” she noted. It’s a stark admission, and she added, “I’m here because I feel spiritual. I’m trying, in my own way, to spiritually tell these victims that I’m truly sorry for what they went through.”
During the sentencing, Judge Timothy Mazzei described Heuerman, who is physically imposing, as a “coward” and a “little man” for the heinous acts against eight women, each of whom weighed around 100 pounds and stood about 5 feet tall.
“Mr. Heuerman, as Mr. Tierney said, I understand that you’re sorry to have been caught. But do you have any regrets for what you did to these poor innocent women?” Mazzei asked. Heuerman replied affirmatively when asked if he felt remorse. “You know, you’re described as a very big man, but if you’re a man, you’re a disgusting, mean little man,” responded Mazzei, visibly emotional, labeling him a coward.
Heuerman received three consecutive life terms without parole, along with four additional terms of 25 years to life in prison. The judge dismissed three minor charges before instructing bailiffs to take Heuerman away. Following this, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney mentioned that local officials intended to fire Heuerman quickly, and by the next day, he was gone.
Ellerup had filed for divorce soon after Heuerman’s arrest on July 13, 2023, when police swarmed their home in Massapequa Park, a suburban area about 55 miles east of New York City.
Since his arrest, Heuerman has been charged with the murders of seven women, admitting to another during a hearing on April 8. Tierney, however, opted not to comment on the possibility of more victims, indicating that further evidence would lead to new indictments presented to a grand jury if necessary.
