Meloni Criticizes Trump for Photo Comments
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed strong disapproval of former President Donald Trump’s remarks claiming she “begged” for a photo at the recent G7 summit in France. She stated she was “appalled” by his comments, insisting that “neither Italy nor I will ever beg.”
In a video shared on Instagram, Meloni described Trump’s statements as “completely fabricated.” She questioned why a U.S. president would speak this way toward an ally, pointing out that this wasn’t the first instance of such behavior. “It’s unfortunate he doesn’t show the same determination against those who threaten Western values,” she added.
In light of Trump’s remarks, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced canceling a planned visit to the U.S. next week. He took to social media to proclaim that Trump’s “serious and offensive words” were disrespectful to all of Italy.
Tajani emphasized the need for a considerate approach to international relations. He remarked on the implications of Trump’s words and hinted at the possible adjustments needed for their relationship moving forward.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto chimed in, noting it was hard to believe Meloni would ever ask for a photo. He highlighted the difficulty for her in setting aside Trump’s previous comments for the sake of Italy and the wider Western alliance.
Despite once having a close rapport, the relationship between Meloni and Trump has become strained, particularly over issues like the Iran conflict and criticisms of the Pope concerning U.S. military actions.
During the G7 summit, which took place from June 17-19 at Evian-les-Bains, Trump was seen conversing with Meloni. He later remarked to Italian media that Meloni seemed eager for a photo, which he claimed she requested. “I didn’t have to talk to her. I felt sorry for her,” he said.
The White House has not provided any comments regarding the situation.
