Trump Signs Agreement with Iran
On Wednesday night, President Trump finalized a memorandum of understanding with Iran, effectively reopening the Strait of Hormuz for unrestricted oil transport and laying groundwork for a prospective peace accord with the country.
While market responses were largely optimistic, the specifics of the deal took many—including those in the US and Israel—off guard. The agreement stipulates significant financial support for rebuilding Iran and mandatorily halts military activities across all fronts, notably in Lebanon.
As one Israeli leader notably stated, “For every Israeli mother who sheds a tear, a thousand Lebanese mothers must shed a tear.” It’s evident that external commentary compounds the already delicate state of peace in the region.
Despite calls for calm, tensions between Hezbollah and Israel escalated, resulting in fierce combat late Thursday and into Friday. This violence led to casualties and stalled ongoing peace negotiations. Thankfully, a ceasefire—mediated by the US and regional partners—has since been put into place, bringing temporary relief.
Late Thursday, the Israeli Defense Forces reported that a Hezbollah drone had detonated near their troops in southern Lebanon, injuring several soldiers. Shortly thereafter, another drone attack resulted in further injuries to Israeli forces.
Tragically, the conflict intensified early Friday when a suspected missile struck an Israeli tank, killing all four crew members inside. This incident was reported by several news outlets.
In retaliation, Israel conducted multiple strikes—over 150 targeting suspected terrorist locations in southern and eastern Lebanon—by early Friday morning.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that he had ordered the military to take decisive action against Hezbollah and emphasized that Israeli forces would remain in the southern Lebanon area as necessary to safeguard northern settlements.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health has reported at least 47 fatalities from the Israeli airstrikes, including a significant number of civilian casualties. Almost 100 others have also been reported injured.
However, this wasn’t enough for some Israeli officials. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed that, “For every Israeli mother weeping, a thousand Lebanese mothers must weep. All Lebanon must burn!” He insisted that Israel’s security demanded more aggressive actions against Hezbollah.
Officials from local governments mentioned that a ceasefire brokered by the US, Qatar, and Iran is now in effect, scheduled to formally start on Friday afternoon.
A US official confirmed that both Hezbollah and Israel are currently observing this ceasefire, following earlier skirmishes.
In response, Hezbollah announced through a statement that its fighters would honor the ceasefire agreement, meditating on actions regarding Israeli military movements in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the IDF reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing operations, noting that Hezbollah’s actions had already breached the ceasefire agreement, showing that their intent to launch attacks on Israel remains unchanged.
Earlier this week, President Trump expressed sorrow over the human toll the conflict has taken, citing thousands killed in Israeli actions since early March. He stated, “We need to focus on addressing the Lebanese situation.”
