In Times Square, a crowd of over 500 people gathered, all excited to be the first to step into the new supermarket.
Shoppers arrived at the store on 42nd Street hours ahead of its opening, eager to experience the new Aldi. Many believe it’s a significant addition to this busy tourist destination.
Baraba Porteus mentioned she appreciated the store’s layout.
“Many years ago, I was stuck on a burning cruise ship, which left me with PTSD,” shared the 71-year-old, who described herself as “claustrophobic.” She added with a laugh, “Going into a basement store? Quite the accomplishment for me.”
This Aldi marks the first in Midtown and is among the few in the entire city.
The grand opening featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and gift bags filled with snacks, olive oil, and beef sticks for the first 200 customers.
Tire Washington, who lives nearby, called the store “the best thing to happen to this area.” She managed to grab some groceries before it officially opened to everyone.
In addition to the tote bags, Aldi is giving out “blind boxes” containing surprise items over the next week, part of a special promotion.
Interestingly, while the giveaways attracted attention, those in line seemed more interested in being among the first to see the new grocery store. Aldi is known for offering groceries at prices lower than many competitors, like Target.
Moreover, the chain has gained popularity for its “Aisle of Shame,” which features a rotating selection of seasonal or unique items beyond just food.
“I’m a huge Aldi fan—I even catered my son’s wedding with their food,” Washington explained. “For affordable yet quality groceries, there really is nothing like it.”
