USMNT Loses Pulisic Ahead of Key Match
The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) is facing a significant setback as Christian Pulisic has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Australia at Lumen Field due to a calf injury.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed Pulisic’s absence shortly before kickoff on June 19, putting an end to a week of speculation about his fitness. Pulisic suffered a severe blow to his left leg during the first half of the team’s 4–1 win over Paraguay, where he also played a pivotal role by assisting Folarin Balogun, leading to an early own goal.
Initially hoped to be a precautionary substitution, the injury exacerbated an existing calf problem, sidelining the American captain during a crucial game that could secure the team’s place in the knockout stages.
Despite earlier optimistic comments from teammate Tyler Adams, who reassured fans that “Captain America” would be fit, Pulisic couldn’t take part in full training sessions after the team transitioned from California to Washington.
Instead, he focused on modified, solo drills while wearing a protective calf sleeve during the week.
Pochettino mentioned that Pulisic was understandably disappointed about the decision but stressed that risking long-term damage so early in the tournament was unwise, particularly against a physically aggressive Australian side.
The coach has adjusted the team’s formation to a 4-3-3 setup, bringing PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi into the starting lineup alongside Balogun and Sergiño Dest.
Now, the Americans must find a way to penetrate the Australian defense without their key forward, all while hoping for Pulisic’s return for the final group stage match against Türkiye on June 25.
