911 Call Reveals Chaos Following Austin Metcalf Stabbing
A 911 call from a friend of Austin Metcalf details the turmoil that ensued after the 17-year-old was stabbed by Carmelo Anthony during a high school track meet. Anthony was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Recent images, released by the Collin County Courthouse, depict the moments surrounding Metcalf’s fatal stabbing by Anthony. The photos include a blood-stained jacket, the folding knife said to have been used, and views of the bleachers at the scene.
Evidence presented at trial included crime scene photos, a recording of the 911 call, and police body camera footage. This footage captured the immediate aftermath of the stabbing and included Anthony’s statements to officers about being confronted.
According to reports, Anthony, then 17, admitted to the stabbing but claimed it was in self-defense after his confrontation with Metcalf and his brother occurred while they were seated in a team tent.
Following his conviction, Anthony’s sentence has led to some backlash from his supporters regarding the jury’s makeup. He will have the possibility of parole after serving half of his sentence.
Collin County District Judge John Roach, who approved the release of the images, acknowledged the public’s interest in the case, emphasizing the importance of transparency now that the trial has concluded.
Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, previously spoke to the media, suggesting that surveillance footage of the incident would directly counter some narratives circulating online about the event. He indicated that the footage would clarify what transpired beneath the Memorial High School team tent.
Before the video was shown in court, Metcalf stated that it revealed a brief interaction that lasted less than ten seconds, directly challenging claims that Anthony was attacked by multiple students. He asserted, “The video shows a shove, a stabbing, and then it’s over,” reinforcing his view that the idea of Anthony being “jumped” is unfounded.
