Carriage rides in Central Park halted after teen passenger's death

Horse-Drawn Carriages Suspended in Central Park Following Tragic Incident

All horse-drawn carriage services in Central Park have been halted after a tragic accident involving a teenage boy. This decision was announced just a day after the incident, which resulted in the boy’s death.

The Transport Workers’ Union, responsible for overseeing the horse-drawn carriage operations, confirmed the suspension on Thursday.

“We have never experienced a fatal accident like this before,” remarked Alexander Kemp, vice president of the TWU Local 100. “While we closed the stables and suspended operations today, we are having extensive internal discussions about what happened and how it could have been prevented.” Kemp expressed his devastation over the tragedy.

Romanchi Mahajan, 18, was visiting from India to mark his high school graduation. His family had been exploring New York City, stopping by landmarks like the Statue of Liberty.

During the incident, a family of three was in the carriage when the horse unexpectedly took off without a driver. Video footage shows the horse galloping away as the driver, who appeared to be taking photos of the passengers, was not at the reins. The horse then collided with another carriage, causing chaos.

According to police reports, Mahajan fell and struck his head on the pavement. His father, Deepak Mahajan, recalled that his son called out for his mother just before the fall.

Sadly, Mahajan succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. Other family members reported minor injuries from the incident.

“This incident should be taken very seriously,” his father stated. “I took away my son’s dream.”

Mahajan’s death is believed to be the first fatality connected to horse-drawn carriages in Central Park’s extensive history, which spans over 150 years. However, it also marks the eighth incident involving horses in the park in just 13 months.

Bernkrant, from the animal rights organization New Yorkers for a Cleaner, Livable, and Safe City, emphasized, “The record of accidents, runaways, horse deaths and injuries, and now the devastating loss of human life is undeniable.”

Animal rights advocates argue that the horses are overworked and inadequately housed, claiming they can become easily frightened in urban settings. Conversely, carriage operators dispute these assertions.

Currently, a horse-drawn carriage ride costs around $72 for the first 20 minutes, and the timeline for resuming services remains uncertain.

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has advocated for closing down the horse-drawn carriage industry, expressing intentions to facilitate a transition that would protect workers while ultimately removing horse-drawn carriages from Central Park.
