McDonald’s to Bring Back Fried Apple Pie for Limited Time
After much anticipation, McDonald’s announced that its fried apple pie, a favorite among nostalgic customers, will make a comeback in select restaurants across the country starting June 23. This revival coincides with celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary.
This dessert, filled with apples sourced from the U.S. and enveloped in a crispy, fried crust, has been missed by many fans since its original appearance on menus in 1968. It was created by Lytton Cochran, a franchise owner from Tennessee. The treat became a staple until 1992, when McDonald’s shifted to baked pies in response to rising health concerns regarding fat and cholesterol, according to reports.
Interestingly, fried apple pies haven’t completely vanished, as they continued to be offered in Hawaii and some international locations, even after the U.S. made the switch.
“Certain foods evoke memories of people and places, and fried apple pie is definitely one of those,” shared Eric Cochran, Lytton’s grandson and a McDonald’s operator. “It’s something that brings back fond memories for many.” To celebrate its return, an impressive 35-foot-tall display of the pie will be showcased along Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois, near Chicago, and will remain until July 4.
Following the announcement, social media buzzed with excitement, especially from those who treasured the fried pies from the past. One Reddit user expressed, “This is fantastic news! But I wish it would last longer than two weeks!” Some are optimistic that this limited-time offering could eventually become a permanent item on the menu.
Additionally, a commenter pointedly remarked, “I think this might lead to a full reintroduction.” Others noted that fried versions are still available in certain areas, with one stating, “They still have them in Hawaii. It seems like the rest of the U.S. is missing out on a good pie.” There was even a discussion about whether the newly returned pie aligns with how they remembered it years ago. An interesting observation came from someone who suggested that “they don’t serve fried apple pie unless it’s cooked in beef tallow.”
As the buzz continues, McDonald’s has yet to provide further commentary on the subject.
