Heat-Related Deaths in Grand Canyon

Recent extreme temperatures in the Grand Canyon have led to several fatalities, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

A press release dated June 19 notes that park rangers and emergency responders dealt with two heat-related incidents on June 12 and June 16, resulting in three deaths. It’s mentioned that these hikers were on trails in the Inner Canyon, where shade temperatures can soar above 109 degrees during the day.

The NPS reported that one man died in one incident, while in another, both a man and a woman were found deceased.

Specifically, a 72-year-old man died of heatstroke on the South Kaibab Trail on June 12, and on June 16, a 67-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman succumbed to apparent heatstroke on the North Kaibab Trail. Investigations are still in progress.

The agency stated that, despite fast responses and air support, all three victims were discovered dead upon rescue crews’ arrival. Their remains were subsequently handed over to the Coconino County Coroner’s Office.

In a different report, the NPS highlighted another tragic incident involving an 18-year-old hiker earlier this month. His death also appeared to be linked to the extreme heat.

On June 3, the Grand Canyon National Park Regional Communications Center received a call at 1:40 p.m. regarding an 18-year-old male exhibiting heat-related symptoms beneath Havasupai Gardens on the Bright Angel Trail. Rangers found the individual about 30 feet below the trail in a remote area. Sadly, despite quick response efforts, life-saving measures did not succeed.

This young man had been attempting a day hike from the South Rim to the Colorado River and was returning via the Bright Angel Trail. The incident is currently under investigation with the Coconino County Coroner’s Office.
