USA 250: Bobby Jones

Bobby Jones, born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta, Georgia, is celebrated as one of the finest amateur golfers ever. He showed remarkable talent early on, advancing to the third round of the U.S. Amateur at just 14. Over his career, he claimed 13 major championships, all as an amateur—a record that still stands today. In 1930, he achieved significant milestones.

Myles Russell has made history as the youngest player at the 2026 U.S. Open, qualifying at the tender age of 17. Competing in a major championship at this age has been a memorable experience for both him and his family.

However, during the final round on Sunday, Russell had a heartwarming surprise that not only created a cherished moment for his family but also brought a mix of emotions to the fans watching.

After taking his approach shot on the par-4 18th, his caddy stepped into the crowd. In a touching gesture, he removed his caddy bib and passed it, along with Russell’s golf bag, to his father, Joe.

Interestingly, this was all Russell’s idea. He asked a USGA rules official if he could hand over caddying for the last hole to his father, and received approval. Talk about the ultimate Father’s Day gift that’s hard to top.

“It was pretty cool,” Russell reflected after completing his round. “He came in just as I was about to celebrate my 18th birthday. A fun Father’s Day present. Hopefully, it’s something he’ll remember for a long while.”

Russell finished the preliminary rounds of the U.S. Open at three over par, qualifying by two strokes. He faced some challenges during the third round—shooting a 74—but managed to end the final round with an even par.

To qualify for this U.S. Open, Russell triumphed in a playoff to secure a second spot. Coincidentally, he had Charlie Woods, Tiger Woods’s son, as his caddy during the qualifying rounds. Both are set to play college golf at Florida State University. Remarkably, in 2024, Russell became the youngest player in Korn Ferry Tour history, finishing in a tie for 20th place.
