USMNT’s New Strategy: Ricardo Pepi Shines Against Australia
IRVINE, Calif. — Amid all the discussions about potential lineups for the match against Australia, few could have predicted Ricardo Pepi’s prominent role in the game.
Coach Pochettino’s decision to field two strikers in the 2-0 victory marked a significant shift from the typical tactics seen in the U.S. men’s national team’s recent matches. Pepi, making his debut World Cup start following Folarin Balogun, embraced the challenge and executed his strategy effectively.
“It’s definitely special,” Pepi remarked, recalling being one of the last players chosen four years prior. “We’ve faced a lot, but starting today helped us out immensely. I’m really glad to make it through.”
The 23-year-old’s journey hasn’t exactly been smooth due to several injuries that limited his impact with the national team up until now. He did, however, showcase his skills during a strong game against Jamaica in the Nations League back in November 2024. Recently, he found his form with PSV in the Netherlands, scoring noteworthy goals—including a standout performance in a friendly against Senegal in late May.
It’s clear he’s currently positioned as the second striker, and although Balogun’s place is secure, Pepi has carved out a vital spot for himself.
This is a crucial role for the U.S., especially considering the team’s struggles with offensive production in the last World Cup in Qatar. With Balogun’s commitment to play for England still looming, the U.S. seems to have finally found some versatility in its attacking lineup.
“Ricardo is one of the best strikers we have in this country,” Pochettino noted. “Last year, he faced quite a few challenges that held him back from fully integrating with the team.”
“But we’ve always believed in him. I think he’s improving every day now that he’s with us. He’s shown he can play alongside other strikers, but also thrive on his own. His ability to create and finish chances is really something special.”
The U.S. men’s national team had a day off from practice on Sunday and was expected back on the field for training on Monday morning.
