LAUSD Superintendent Resigns Amid Federal Investigation
Alberto Carvalho, the Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), has stepped down following a federal inquiry lasting four months.
Earlier this year, Carvalho was placed on paid administrative leave after the FBI conducted a search of his home. Since that incident, details regarding the investigation have been scarce, and he has consistently denied any misconduct.
“It remains uncertain if Mr. Carvalho’s resignation is related to a negotiated settlement. His contract stipulates that he is entitled to at least 12 months’ pay if terminated without cause,” reported Los Angeles Times on Monday.
Law enforcement sources have indicated that the investigation may be tied to Carvalho’s dealings with a contractor linked to a failed artificial intelligence chatbot initiative at the district. In his only public comment since the FBI raid, he reiterated his lack of wrongdoing through his lawyer.
Notably, Carvalho did not address the ongoing investigation in his resignation letter.
“It has been a great honor to serve you,” he stated in a letter addressed to students, educators, staff, and families. “Together, over the past four years, we have made significant strides, and that success belongs to our students, educators, and community.”
“Prioritizing students has always been my guiding principle,” Carvalho added. “I am resigning as LAUSD superintendent effective June 21, 2026, because I believe it’s crucial for our schools to stay dedicated to students and learning, free from distractions.”
The school board issued its own response.
“The board is committed to ensuring stability, continuity, and ongoing progress through strong leadership,” their statement read. “Our goal remains the same: delivering a quality education for all students, supporting our hardworking employees, and maintaining community trust.”
Andres Chait, who is currently acting as superintendent, will continue in this role until a successor is appointed. The district serves over 500,000 students.
“Mr. Carvalho respects the judicial process and has always acted in the best interest of students and within legal boundaries,” a statement from his law firm, Holland & Knight, said. “While the investigation proceeds, prosecutors have yet to furnish any evidence of Mr. Carvalho violating federal law.”
