Initially, the Davie Police Department in Florida stated that their investigation into an alleged assault involving Geno Smith was closed. However, they’ve since clarified that they are continuing to investigate the situation.
Officers were dispatched to the Jets quarterback’s home around 4:40 p.m. on Sunday for reports of an assault, but details were scant. A spokesperson had mentioned that there was “no one in custody at the scene,” suggesting the matter was resolved.
Yet, just the following evening, a spokesperson from the ministry informed several news outlets that the case was, in fact, still active and under investigation. “We learned this evening that detectives have decided to keep looking into the incident,” he said, according to reports. “It is ongoing, and we can’t share more details right now.”
Interestingly, the spokesperson could not clarify why the police shifted their stance or who made the decision to reopen the investigation.
A report outlining the details of the incident will be available once detectives finalize their inquiries and it gets approved for release, according to further reports.
The allegations first surfaced when a woman named Kristen posted a video on her Instagram Story, claiming Smith made inappropriate advances towards her. She stated in the caption of her video, which lasted over 80 seconds, that the NFL quarterback “punched my ass.”
In her video, she expressed frustration, saying, “Today is the day! Geno Smith beat my ass. I can’t leave him alone because he hates taking care of special needs kids and would rather watch sex online or play Call of Duty.”
According to her, after an argument in her driveway, Smith “ran outside and attacked me,” leading her to scream for help in the street.
She also alleged that Smith had broken her computer, discarded her wallet, and taken money from her vehicle.
The video featured a brief moment showing Smith speaking with a police officer.
So far, Smith has not publicly responded to these accusations, and the Jets have not commented either.
In a show of support for Smith, the mother of his son, Seven, took to social media on Sunday. She disputed Kristen’s claims, asserting that Smith is “more than capable” of caring for their son, both now and in the future.
She urged others to refrain from spreading negativity online, saying, “Let’s kill those stories. Stop going on the internet and drawing my son into your web of dysfunction.”
Smith was recently traded to the Jets from the Raiders earlier this offseason, marking his return to the team he played for from 2013 to 2016. He’s anticipated to be the starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
