Alex Zendejas from the USMNT may have a World Cup opportunity against Turkey

Alex Zendejas Awaits His Moment During the 2026 World Cup

IRVINE, Calif. — For the past month, Alex Zendejas has been caught in a whirlwind of anticipation, hoping to translate his dreams into reality.

Each day, he walks from the team hotel to the practice field, fully aware of the significance of participating in what many consider the biggest tournament in sports history. Yet, during the first two matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 28-year-old has faced a particularly tough challenge: watching from the sidelines.

Embracing patience has become critical for a player who thrives under pressure with Liga MX powerhouse Club America and is used to performing in front of enthusiastic crowds.

But it seems his opportunity might finally be within reach.

Team USA has clinched first place in Group D, having secured victories against Paraguay and Australia. However, head coach Mauricio Pochettino is now confronted with a tricky situation as they head into Thursday night’s final group stage match against Turkey in Los Angeles.

The Americans are in a good spot, boasting six points and a favorable goal difference of plus five, plus a ticket to the round of 32. Yet, success brings its complications: four starting players are carrying yellow cards. If any of those players receive another yellow card, they risk suspension for the final tournament taking place on July 1 in Santa Clara, California. Adding to this concern is the ongoing issue with Christian Pulisic’s left calf, coupled with the typical dilemmas faced by any top World Cup contender. How much can you risk now when the main event is still some time away?

Logically, rotating players might be the best approach—and Zendejas could stand to gain significantly if Pochettino decides to switch things up.

“I’ve been training hard. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity,” he mentioned on Monday. “I think it will come. Ultimately, it’s the coach’s decision, and I need to respect that.”

His tone didn’t convey any frustration, nor was there a push for playing time. Instead, he exhibited a calm demeanor, underscoring his happiness in being part of the team.

“I’ve worked hard, had fun, and I’m really enjoying this dream that I’m living right now,” he reflected. “I couldn’t ask for anything more. I’m really glad to be with these players.”

This positive outlook has characterized the U.S. national team. Players frequently talk about the uplifting atmosphere in their camp, and Zendejas described a group that has managed to maintain its focus while still keeping the mood light.

“The atmosphere is heightened,” he observed. “The team is having fun. Training is challenging but it feels good. We are competing with one another.”

He even chuckled at the increased attention surrounding the team, noting that both Mexican and Club America fans are closely monitoring the American player, hoping to see him take the field.

“I hope they keep watching,” Zendejas added.

If Thursday unfolds as expected, that wish may very well become a reality.

The wait has stretched long enough for Zendejas. With the World Cup stage established and the risks seemingly lower than in the recent past, it appears that as one of the more recognized players still seeking his first chance in the tournament, the door might finally be ajar.

Now, all that remains is for Pochettino to make the call and let him step through.
