Jenny Costa Honeycutt Advances in Congressional Race

Jenny Costa Honeycutt, a councilwoman in Charleston County and a small business owner, is now closer to securing a spot in Congress to succeed prominent Republican Rep. Nancy Mace.

According to the Associated Press, Honeycutt triumphed in the Republican runoff election for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District against state Rep. Mark Smith.

Mace, who has a long history of supporting former President Donald Trump, opted to run for governor this year instead of seeking reelection.

In the earlier Republican primary, Honeycutt and Smith, both former members of the Mount Pleasant City Council, emerged as the top candidates. However, since neither secured over 50% of the votes, they proceeded to a runoff.

The 1st Congressional District covers a significant portion of South Carolina’s coastal area, a seat that has been traditionally held by Republicans, except for a brief period in the 2018 elections when Democrats gained control.

Notably, some past Republican holders of this seat have gone on to serve as senators, including Tim Scott and former Governor Mark Sanford.

Honeycutt, who identifies as a strong conservative, is now set to face off against the winner of a Democratic runoff between attorney Mack Deford and retired Coast Guard Lt. Gen. Nancy Lacore.

While Honeycutt is generally seen as the frontrunner in the upcoming general election, the Cook Political Report recently shifted its assessment of the race from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican,” hinting at a more competitive landscape ahead.
