Cubs pitcher Edward Cabrera was hurt while playing first base during the game against the Mets at Citi Field on Tuesday night, and he was taken off the field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After the Cubs won 9-6, the team disclosed that Cabrera had strained both his left hamstring and adductor while trying to catch a throw from second baseman Nico Horner and sliding to field a line drive from Jared Young.
He managed to catch the throw to end the inning, but then he immediately rolled over, clutching his leg in obvious pain.
Trying to get up and walk, Cabrera limped but quickly collapsed after just a few steps.
The medical staff quickly rushed to assess his condition.
Ultimately, he needed assistance to get onto a cart to leave the field.
After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell informed reporters that Cabrera would be placed on the injured reserve list because of the hamstring issue.
“We’ll do some imaging tomorrow and see what it shows,” he noted.
This season, the Cubs have already faced challenges, having cut several players from their Opening Day rotation, including Matthew Boyd and right-handers Cade Horton and Jameson Taillon.
Counsell expressed concern about the pitching staff’s overall state, describing it as a “tough situation.”
Cabrera pitched five innings against the Mets on Tuesday, allowing two runs and striking out four while throwing 99 pitches.
Before this game, he had a record of 4-4 with a 5.21 ERA over 13 starts.
Cabrera joined the Cubs in a trade with Miami back in January. Unfortunately, he has dealt with multiple injuries this season, having to exit due to cramps in his right hand on June 16 and spending time on the injured list since May 21 because of a blister on his middle finger.
