Italian Prime Minister Reacts to Trump Incident

On Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her surprise over the recent disagreement with President Donald Trump, emphasizing she does not wish to escalate the situation further.

During a press conference in Rome, which was part of the third edition of Il Giorno de la Verita (“The Day of Truth”), Meloni stated that she believes relations between Italy and the United States should normalize. She noted that the altercation would not impact their bilateral relations, likening foreign policy to something far more complex than a reality TV show.

Throughout her discussion, Meloni touched on her recent clash with Trump, who had remarked that she “begged” him for a photo at the G7 summit held in Evian, France.

In response to the controversy surrounding this statement, she admitted to feeling “truly shocked” and disheartened. However, she made it clear that she does not intend to keep the issue alive.

“I believe bilateral cooperation with the United States needs to return to normal,” Meloni stated, also reflecting on her comments made during a recent Council of Ministers meeting. She acknowledged that while Foreign Minister Tajani was correct to cancel his Washington visit as a way to send a message, there is no requirement for additional actions once the message has been received.

When asked about potential repercussions from the U.S., such as tariffs, Meloni expressed confidence that such measures were unlikely. She highlighted the ongoing positive relations, noting the recent visit of Defense Minister Guido Crossetto to Washington and his meeting with Army Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“Frankly, I don’t think there’s a risk of a backlash. These two systems have a longstanding history of cooperation, so I doubt that a social media debate could undermine that,” she added.

Meloni underlined the need to treat foreign policy with the seriousness it deserves, commenting that discussions shouldn’t resemble trivial conversations. She used references to widely circulating memes to illustrate her point but emphasized the complexity of the subject.

In conclusion, Meloni reaffirmed her intention to set aside the disagreement and confirmed that the Italian government would participate in an upcoming reception in Rome hosted by the U.S. Embassy to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Fourth of July.

“It will be business as usual, just like the last 80 years. The focus remains on the significance of a strong relationship between the United States and Europe, which is crucial to the strength of the Western world,” she remarked.
