Mets Continue Struggles with Loss to Cubs

The Mets are having a rough go of it lately.

They dropped their fourth consecutive game during the first part of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Citi Field, falling 10-3 to the Cubs. This defeat means the Mets have lost the first two games in a four-game series against Chicago.

During this losing streak, their overall score tally has been pretty dismal—40 runs allowed to just 14 runs scored.

The closest margin they had prior was a four-point loss in Tuesday’s game, which ended 9-6.

In the third inning, a few home runs briefly placed the Mets in a leading position. Bo Bichette homered into left field, followed by Jared Young, who hit his sixth of the season. Then, Francisco Alvarez launched a 437-foot homer to center, putting the Mets up 3-0.

But the Cubs quickly responded in the next inning, thanks to former Mets player Michael Conforto’s RBI double and a two-run home run by Michael Busch, leveling the score.

Javier Asad, the Cubs’ starter, made quick work of the Mets in the fifth inning, striking out Carson Benge, AJ Ewing, and Bichette in order.

Nolan McLean had a challenging outing on the mound for the Mets. After Niko Hoerner’s deep double into right field and a base hit from Miguel Amaya, McLean allowed a home run, giving the Cubs a 6-3 advantage.

He was eventually replaced by Jonathan Pintaglio before the sixth inning. McLean wrapped up his day with seven hits allowed, six runs scored against him, two walks, nine strikeouts, along with two home runs and two hits.

Pintaglio faced his own struggles, starting with consecutive walks and loading the bases in the eighth after hitting Amaya with a pitch. Dansby Swanson added to the devastation with a grand slam, extending the Cubs’ lead to 10-3.
