Delaware Senator Comments on New York Primary Results

Delaware Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester was hesitant to specify where socialism might be considered “beneficial” when discussing the outcomes of the recent primary in New York.

During a Wednesday interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Blunt Rochester was asked about the primary results. Notably, three candidates from the Socialist Party emerged victorious, even ousting two incumbent Congress members. While she refrained from commenting on the potential implications for the Democratic Party overall, she did express satisfaction with the election outcomes.

“First of all, I think the fact that people are participating at a level that we’ve never seen before is a positive thing, especially on this country’s 250th anniversary,” she stated. “We want people to participate. But one thing I can say about the Democratic Party, and as someone striving for a majority, is that politics is local.” Blunt Rochester highlighted how campaign strategies adapt to various regions, mentioning that Alaska Senate candidate Mary Peltola focuses on themes of “Fish, Family, and Freedom,” which may not resonate in New York or North Carolina where campaigns differ significantly.

She emphasized the importance of listening to constituents: “The most important thing for us is to ensure that we hear the people. They need to know that we are fighting for them, and while circumstances may vary across the nation, everyone is concerned about the economy and rising prices.” Ultimately, she regarded these primary wins as a win-win situation.

When CNBC host Joe Kernen pressed her about socialism, asking, “Where has socialism ever worked?” she replied, somewhat evasively, “Is that another question or for the next interview?” After Kernen reiterated the question, she responded, “Well, if you let me back, I’ll talk about every race in the country.” Kernen acknowledged his rhetorical nature of the question, concluding the segment by thanking her for sharing her insights.

In New York, Socialist Party candidates Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Daria Lisa Avila Chevalier ran on platforms that included socialist economic policies and critical stances toward immigration enforcement. Notably, they received endorsements from New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani.
