AOC does not dismiss possibility of Senate candidacy following progressive primary victories

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes politicians should avoid taking funding from AI.

New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t dismissed the idea of running for the Senate in the future. Following the success of three progressive candidates in the recent New York state primary, she expressed that she felt both inspired and encouraged by the results.

When asked if this motivates her to consider a Senate run, Ocasio-Cortez replied, “I’m thinking about what’s going to happen in the future,” suggesting that while she’s enthusiastic, she isn’t ready to announce any plans just yet. She added, “I’m definitely inspired by all the new people we’re going to bring to the state and to the Legislature next year.”

With her significant win against two challengers in New York’s 14th Congressional District, speculation about her political trajectory is growing. Some believe she could even challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in future primaries.

Her comments come at a time when talk about her potential political aspirations is everywhere. Ocasio-Cortez didn’t rule out a 2028 presidential run either, stating, “Maybe, maybe not,” when questioned about it.

The victory of a candidate supported by socialist New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani over a moderate Democrat has raised conversations about the direction of the Democratic Party, particularly regarding progressive ideals.

In response to whether a candidate critical of Israel could set a national precedent for the party, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the importance of organizing and campaign strategies, not just policies. “It’s not just about our substantive positions but equally about how we organize and operate,” she explained.

Like Ocasio-Cortez, the candidates who recently won in the primaries have taken a stand on Israel’s military operations in Gaza, making this a key point for the progressive branch of the party.

The results reflect a notable increase in support for socialist-backed Democratic candidates in New York. Daria Riza Avila Chevalier succeeded in defeating incumbent Congressman Adriano Espaira in the 13th District. Meanwhile, Rep. Claire Valdez won her primary in the 7th District, which will see a new representative since the current one isn’t running again. Additionally, former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander ousted Representative Dan Goldman in the 10th District.

If these candidates perform well in the upcoming midterm elections, it could markedly increase the presence of American Democratic Socialists in Congress.
