US Mint Unveils Commemorative Quarters for 250th Anniversary

The United States Mint has introduced a limited-edition coin in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence.

On Tuesday, the Mint announced plans to mint 250,000 Semiquincentennial 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarters.

These quarters will feature a unique “July 4” privy mark, a small symbol traditionally used to confirm authenticity and currently employed for special or commemorative coins. Interestingly, they will omit a mint mark, which typically indicates the production location of the coins.

The Mint shared that these quarters will be randomly distributed alongside other 2026 Declaration of Independence Quarters, providing Americans with a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stumble upon a piece of history in everyday transactions.” They’re expected to be available nationwide by July 4.

“This is more than just a coin; it’s a defining moment in our nation’s story,” remarked Mint Director Paul Hollis. “We encourage Americans to enjoy the hunt for these iconic quarters, as they are meant to be shared, cherished, and remembered during this historic anniversary.”

The design on the obverse side displays President Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration’s author, along with the motto “E Pluribus Unum,” which translates to “Out of many, one,” as well as “In God We Trust” and “1776 ~ 2026.”

The reverse side showcases the cracked Liberty Bell with the inscriptions “The Declaration of Independence,” “Quarter Dollar,” “Liberty,” and “United States of America.”

Additionally, the Mint has made one-time alterations to other American coins, like the dime and half dollar, for this particular anniversary.

For instance, while the 2025 half dollar featured President John F. Kennedy and the presidential seal, the 2026 version showcases the face of the Statue of Liberty, with her hand passing her torch on the reverse.

“The designs on these historic coins tell the story of America’s journey toward a ‘more perfect union’ and celebrate the nation’s core ideals of liberty,” stated Mint Deputy Director Kristie McNally. “We hope this offers every American a chance to hold 250 years of our country’s history in their hands as we Connect America through Coins.”

Interestingly, the Trump administration previously hinted at creating a special edition coin featuring President Donald Trump’s image for the 250th birthday of the United States.

This announcement adds an exciting element to how Americans might interact with their currency in the coming months.
