Marina Mabry Ties WNBA Scoring Record with 53 Points
In a remarkable display of skill, Marina Mabry of the Toronto Tempo scored 53 points in a commanding 125-94 win over the Los Angeles Sparks. This achievement marks the third time in WNBA history that a player has reached this point total, previously accomplished only by A’ja Wilson and Liz Cambage.
Mabry’s performance included nine three-pointers, contributing significantly to the Tempo’s record for the most points scored in a regulation game in WNBA history—previously set at 127 points by the Phoenix Mercury, but only after two overtimes.
Feeling the rhythm from the start, Mabry netted 27 points by halftime and added another 12 by the end of the third quarter, bringing her total to an impressive 39 points. Despite the game’s apparent outcome, the Tempo seemed keen to help Mabry set a new WNBA record, encouraging her as she sunk multiple three-pointers to reach and eventually tie the record.
As the clock wound down, there was hope that Mabry might secure the record for herself. However, her last two three-point attempts fell short, and she exited the game with a little over a minute remaining. The crowd responded with applause and a standing ovation, sharing in the moment as her teammates congratulated her on an unforgettable night.
Adding to the special atmosphere, Mabry’s sister, Michaela, was present in the stands. They had previously played together at Notre Dame and come up through the New Jersey women’s basketball ranks. After the game, Michaela rushed onto the court to embrace her sister, a moment that will likely be cherished by their family for years to come.
In her postgame remarks, Mabry reflected on the significance of the game, especially since her sister doesn’t get to see her play often. “Nothing like this would happen without my teammates. They really found me,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, particularly for a player who relies on support for three-point shots.
As this season is the Tempo’s inaugural year as an expansion team, Mabry has been a standout player, previously scoring 37 points in a game, which was the franchise’s highest before this record-setting performance. Mabry’s statistics for the game included 17 of 28 from three-point range and 9 of 18 overall, alongside six rebounds and two assists.
