Sam Darnold was visibly happy after the Super Bowl win back in February, but he recently opened up about feeling some self-blame during the celebrations for the Lombardi Trophy.
During a chat with former NFL players Taylor Lewan and Will Compton on their podcast “Boys With Basin With The Boys,” Darnold expressed some disappointment about certain aspects of Seattle’s championship victory.
“I’m not saying anything horrible, but I know I didn’t play up to my best in the Super Bowl,” Darnold remarked. “We missed a lot of throws, but we still came out on top. Our defense was phenomenal and didn’t give up the ball.” He added, “Still, winning the Super Bowl like that felt a bit off.”
In the Seahawks’ 29-13 win against the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium, Darnold completed only 19 of 38 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown. Upon reviewing the game footage, he noted there were “a few” throws that he regretted. He specifically mentioned a missed opportunity with Jackson Smith vs. Nijiba that could have resulted in a touchdown, and also highlighted two other plays from Rashid Shahid and Cooper Kupp that could have changed the final score.
Darnold recalled feeling frustrated at the moment, thinking, “How could I miss this throw now? Seriously?” He reflected, “Right afterward, I was just like, ‘How did I miss that?'”
However, Darnold does have the means to move past these feelings quickly. Not only did he get a Super Bowl ring, but he also tied the knot just days after the victory.
