Federal Scrutiny of MARTA Following Tragic Incident

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has emphasized the Trump administration’s commitment to ensuring the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is held “accountable” after the tragic murder of 66-year-old Margaret Swan. In a statement released on Friday, he informed that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is thoroughly reviewing the safety and security measures of the transit system.

Duffy explained that the FTA has initiated an extensive examination of MARTA’s spending on security, its safety protocols, and the potential risks impacting both passengers and employees. While MARTA met its initial response deadline and engaged with the government, Duffy pointed out that the FTA’s work is ongoing.

“We are evaluating every aspect of their plan to determine if significant improvements have taken place,” he mentioned. The review involves analyzing hundreds of pages of documentation and conducting on-site visits to assess conditions. The goal, he noted, is to enhance safety for everyone using the system.

The scrutiny of MARTA’s operations came in response to the senseless killing of Swan. On May 30, she was traveling on a northbound MARTA train near the Oakland City Station when 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews allegedly approached her and brandished a folding knife.

According to prosecutors and a Fulton County arrest warrant, Matthews slashed Swan’s throat before stabbing her around 18 to 20 times in the neck and chest as she attempted to defend herself. Witnesses reported that there was no prior interaction between the two before the assault.

After the attack, Matthews allegedly pushed Swan to the floor and exited the train at Oakland City Station, where he was arrested by MARTA police while still holding the bloody knife. Emergency medical responders attempted to save her, but Swan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Matthews is currently facing felony murder charges at the local level and a federal charge of assault with a dangerous weapon, with the intent to kill on public transit. If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty, pending decisions from the Acting Attorney General.

Duffy has previously noted alarming statistics, stating that assaults, robberies, and rapes on MARTA trains occur at more than three times the national average. The FTA’s audit aims to ensure MARTA effectively implements safety measures and responsibly allocates federal funds allocated for improvements.

MARTA has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the situation.
