F1 in Austria: Hamilton’s Comeback After Injury

Formula 1 has made its way to Austria, where the race at the Red Bull Ring is set to take place. The buzz surrounding this event is still marked by Lewis Hamilton’s recent victory at the Spanish Grand Prix just two weeks ago. It was a monumental moment for the British driver, marking his 106th win but notably his first with Ferrari, the team he joined in 2025.

This win felt like a significant comeback for Hamilton, especially after what most would consider a challenging season for both him and Ferrari in 2025. But, as it turns out, this wasn’t just about bouncing back; it’s much deeper than that.

Earlier in 2025, Hamilton participated in a private pre-season test for Ferrari and encountered a serious crash. While the crash was reported, the extent of his injuries remained undisclosed until now. Ironically, this incident occurred at the same circuit where he had just claimed a win.

Reflecting on the accident, Hamilton stated, “Last year I hit the wall hard in testing. One of the discs in my neck had broken off and hit a nerve, so I couldn’t do much for about nine weeks.” It’s striking to think that during that time, he was dealing with daily chiropractic appointments and struggling with sleep.

“I had painkillers and had to get an injection as well,” he explained. “I did everything I could to fix it.” What’s particularly interesting—or perhaps a bit alarming—is that he managed to engage in pre-season testing and even some races while nursing such a serious neck injury.

F1 drivers put in a lot of effort to train their necks to withstand the intense G-forces they experience during races, so it’s baffling to consider what someone like Hamilton endured while coping with this injury.

Now, as he heads into the race weekend in Austria, there’s a sense of anticipation. Though it hasn’t started smoothly—he finished fifth in both practice sessions—he still edged out his teammate, Charles Leclerc. It’ll be interesting to see if Hamilton can build on that victory in Spain with another solid performance in Austria.
