Bill Maher praises international guests at the World Cup: 'They are showing Americans that this place is pretty great'

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage Winds Down

The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to a close, signaling the end of the tournament journey for many countries participating in the U.S.

Fans from these nations have seemingly enjoyed their visit, and who could blame them? The excitement has been palpable—from Freddie’s journey across the country to the enthusiastic Scottish fans taking over bars and pubs along the East Coast. It’s been quite an experience following fans from various backgrounds this year.

Not everyone shares the enthusiasm for foreign tourists raving about America. However, some see this World Cup as a refreshing boost to the country’s image. Liberal talk show host Bill Maher highlighted this in a recent episode of “Real Time,” emphasizing that the people attending the tournament help make it memorable, alongside the teams.

“I’m thrilled that on our 250th birthday, the World Cup has brought people who remind us that this place is pretty amazing,” Maher said, receiving cheers and applause from his audience.

Of course, Maher mixed in some of his usual humor, cracking jokes about how he might score better in a Star Trek trivia contest. But he also gave an enthusiastic nod to the tournament as a whole.

He noted that while America has its problems, perfection isn’t a realistic expectation. “Our country is called ‘America,’ not ‘Utopia,’” he quipped, suggesting that we shouldn’t expect to be more perfect than what’s in our minds but rather be better than Belgium.

Interestingly, many tourist reactions on social media during the World Cup paint the U.S. in an almost glowing light. Maher pointed out how social media is filled with videos of tourists marveling at what they perceive as the American lifestyle: “These folks are living like rock stars,” he remarked.

When someone as outspoken as Maher expresses positivity about foreign soccer fans celebrating their home country, it highlights the diverse opinions within more liberal circles.

Instead of saying, “Hey, America is great,” some individuals on the left are focused on pointing out the country’s flaws.

Maher’s entire segment was notable and deserves a complete watch, especially his passionate conclusion that seems to bring it all together.

“Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but I believe it’s our American system that’s led to the most Nobel Prize winners and inventions like the light bulb, telephone, smartphone, airplane, personal computer, and even party-sized bags of Extra Flamin’ Hot Cheetos,” he concluded.

I think he made a pretty compelling point.

Let’s all show some pride in our country as it marks its 250th anniversary next weekend. If visitors can appreciate it, surely we can too.
