Puppies saved and named after the starting five of the Knicks

Meet the MVP Puppies

This weekend, five rescue dogs are making their way to Long Island for adoption, and they’ve been given names inspired by the starting pitchers of the NBA champion Knicks.

Named Jalen, KAT, OG, Josh, and Bridges, these pups were celebrated by the animal rescue group Ollie’s Angels. Interestingly, the announcement coincided with Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

“It’s quite the coincidence that we were asked to help these puppies on the day the Knicks clinched the championship. When we realized there were five of them, we thought it would be a fun way to honor the team,” said Melissa Bilawski, the director of Ollie’s Angels.

Bilawski expressed that all the women involved in the rescue are devoted Knicks fans, which added to their excitement about this initiative.

She also mentioned that the names felt appropriate for these pups, which she suspects are some sort of lab mix.

“Our rescue efforts focus on determination and giving second chances, much like the Knicks have shown this season. These puppies faced significant challenges, and their survival was far from guaranteed, yet here they are, thriving,” she explained.

“Just like the Knicks, our dedication is unwavering. Once we commit to rescuing a dog, we won’t rest until it finds a safe home. We’ll do whatever it takes, right up to the last second, to ensure they get proper care.”

The puppies were saved from a rural area in Dorchester County, South Carolina, where there’s a significant issue with unwanted dogs.

“A local man had been feeding stray dogs that had come onto his property. Due to a lack of spaying and neutering in South Carolina, the females quickly started having puppies. Eventually, the number of dogs became overwhelming, prompting one of our rescue partners in South Carolina to reach out for assistance,” Bilawski shared.

This week, Ollie’s Angels introduced their starting five on Instagram, capturing their playful spirit with the caption: “Whether they’re running around the living room or showing off their adorable antics, they’re proving that five is indeed the magic number.”

Bilawski noted that the feedback from their initial post has been phenomenal. “It’s a tremendous victory for us,” she said. “Every social media post can have a significant impact if it helps someone notice a rescue pup.”

Founded in 2016, Ollie’s Angels, named after Bilawski’s own rescue dog, has successfully saved over 3,000 abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs both domestically and internationally.

She hopes that naming a puppy after a Knicks player will pique the interest of basketball fans who may not have considered adopting before.

“If even one more family decides to adopt because of a pup’s name, then we’ve accomplished our goal,” she reflected. “Every person who shares their story contributes to saving another life.”
