Stranger on a Plane Aids in Diagnosis of Chronic Illness
A woman, after living for over a decade with an undiagnosed chronic illness, found answers to her health struggles thanks to a chance encounter on a flight.
Caitlin Neelley, a 22-year-old from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has been battling Type 1 diabetes since childhood. Her diagnosis came unexpectedly, initiated by a stranger sitting next to her on a plane.
“When I was 11, I flew with my mom for Thanksgiving to see my grandparents,” Caitlin recalled. “Looking back, I exhibited many tell-tale signs of Type 1 diabetes, but at that time, we just didn’t connect the dots.”
While traveling, she felt unusually fatigued and extremely thirsty, unable to quench her thirst no matter how much water she drank. She even made frequent trips to the restroom—almost ten times—during the flight.
Though these symptoms are typical of Type 1 diabetes, her parents assumed Caitlin, an active child and dancer, was simply overdoing it.
On the second leg of their journey, a conversation began with an older man seated nearby. It unexpectedly turned toward the topic of Type 1 diabetes.
The man shared his heartbreaking story of having lost his wife and daughter to the disease.
After discussing Caitlin’s troubling symptoms—her fatigue, weakness, and overwhelming thirst—the man suggested that her mother should have her tested.
“At the time, it felt like a random chat. Now, looking back, it feels almost surreal,” Caitlin said.
Once they arrived at their grandparents’ home, Caitlin’s relatives noted she looked thinner than before, prompting her mother to worry further.
When Caitlin wet the bed that night—something unusual for an 11-year-old—her mother took decisive action.
On Thanksgiving morning, Caitlin was rushed to urgent care, leading to a transfer to the emergency room. There, her blood sugar was found to be alarmingly high at around 500 mg/dL, resulting in a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis.
Type 1 diabetes, a lifelong autoimmune condition, prevents insulin production, leading to elevated blood sugar levels that can cause severe health issues if left untreated. Symptoms can include excessive thirst, fatigue, sudden weight loss, and frequent urination, among others.
Daily management of the condition entails insulin injections and glucose monitoring to prevent serious complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve issues.
“It’s not about consuming too much sugar or making poor lifestyle choices—it’s a misconception,” Caitlin explained. “Type 1 can affect both children and adults.”
She shared her narrative on TikTok, stating it resonated with numerous viewers, and expressed gratitude for sparking discussions about Type 1 diabetes and the importance of addressing health concerns.
Reflecting on the stranger who altered her life for the better, Caitlin noted, “I think about him often. We never got his name or connected again, but his words had a powerful impact on my life.”
“Some call it fate, and I can see why,” she added, noting curiosity about how her family overlooked the signs earlier and her sudden onset of diabetes at such a young age.
“These questions highlight why I felt compelled to tell my story,” she concluded.
