On Sunday, Canada faced South Africa in the Round of 32, entering the match as the favorites. However, the game was more challenging than anticipated.
With the clock winding down in the second half, both teams were locked in a scoreless tie. But in the 92nd minute, Canada scored. A cross into the box redirected off a South African defender and then ricocheted off Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustaquio’s chest, resulting in a goal.
Eustaquio capitalized on this chance, striking the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, beating South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Throughout the match, Canada appeared stronger, registering seven shots on goal while the expected goals difference stood at 1.32 for Canada to 0.13 for South Africa. Yet, it took Eustaquio’s late goal for Canada to finally secure the victory.
This win marks Canada’s first victory in the World Cup finals.
As one of the co-hosts for the 2026 World Cup, along with the U.S. and Mexico, Canada played all three of its group matches at home. The game against South Africa took place in Los Angeles Stadium, Inglewood, California.
Following this, Canada will next face the winner of the Netherlands versus Morocco match on July 4 in Houston.
In other matchups, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the third-place team in Group B, will take on the United States on July 1 at a stadium in the San Francisco Bay Area. The U.S. has advanced after winning its group.
The United States is heavily favored against Bosnia (-700 on DraftKings) in hopes of progressing to the Round of 16. If successful, the U.S. will then meet the winner of the Belgium vs. Senegal match on July 6.
With the tournament unfolding, Canada managed to triumph, leaving the U.S. with a prime opportunity to join its North American counterparts in the knockout stage.
