Julia Letlow Wins Republican Senate Nomination in Louisiana
United States Representative Julia Letlow has clinched the Republican nomination for the Senate in Louisiana, signaling another victory for a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump. This win comes as Letlow is set to replace GOP Senator Bill Cassidy.
The race was called on Saturday evening by the Associated Press with 99% of the votes counted, showing Letlow (R-La.) leading with 56.9% against U.S. Treasurer John Flemming (R-La.) who garnered 43.1%.
Letlow and Fleming both advanced from the GOP primary held on May 16, where they outperformed Cassidy.
Throughout her campaign, Letlow demonstrated her loyalty to Trump, contrasting sharply with Cassidy, who had aimed to convict the former president during impeachment discussions in 2021.
“I am so filled with gratitude for the greatest president this country has ever had, Donald J. Trump,” Letlow expressed during her election night celebration in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “I am also so incredibly grateful for your endorsement.”
According to her campaign website, Letlow grew up in Monroe, Louisiana, and made history as the first Republican woman elected to Congress from the state. She initially won the 5th Congressional District in a special election back in March 2021 and was reelected with a strong 65% of the votes.
“I am deeply honored by the trust the people of Louisiana have placed in me. Thank you to every voter, volunteer, and supporter who made this victory possible,” she wrote on Facebook. “I am thankful for President Trump’s endorsement, and the support from Governor Landry, Leader Scalise, Congressman Higgins, Attorney General Murrill, and many other amazing conservatives.”
Meanwhile, in the Democratic primary runoff, Jamie Davis (D-La.) and Gary Crockett (D-La.) were competing. Jamie Davis, a third-generation farmer from Tensas Parish, won decisively with about 80% of the vote, while Crockett, a Navy veteran and business executive from New Orleans, received around 20%.
Letlow now stands a strong chance of succeeding Cassidy in a state Trump carried by a significant margin in 2024. If elected in November, Letlow would make history as Louisiana’s first female Republican senator.
As the primary runoffs concluded, Jamie Davis will now face Letlow in the upcoming general election.
Trump, who endorsed Letlow in January, congratulated her on Truth Social following the results.
“Great News!!! Julia Letlow WON in Louisiana, beating conclusively a very strong and smart opponent. Congratulations to Julia. She will be a truly GREAT Senator!” the former president stated.
In an earlier post, Trump had shown his support for Letlow, emphasizing her qualifications and character. He expressed confidence that she would make significant contributions in the Senate.
“Highly Respected America First Congresswoman, Julia Letlow, of the wonderful State of Louisiana, is a Great Star. I know Julia well and have seen her tested at the highest levels. She is a TOTAL WINNER!” he wrote.
