Anthony Rizzo criticizes former Yankees teammate Jazz Chisholm for getting thrown out of the game

Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Ejected During Game Against Red Sox

Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Yankees’ second baseman, had a heated exchange with home plate umpire Adam Hamari over a called third strike during the sixth inning of Sunday’s game against the Red Sox, which ended in a 5-4 loss for the Yankees. In a fit of frustration, Chisholm threw his helmet and was subsequently ejected from the game.

Despite attempts from manager Aaron Boone and first base coach Dan Fiorito to calm him down, they couldn’t prevent Chisholm’s departure, which resulted in Anthony Volpe being called from the bench to take his place.

Former Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo, a teammate of Chisholm’s on the 2024 American League championship team, expressed his disapproval of the situation. “We need to be smarter there,” Rizzo commented during an NBC broadcast. “Jazz is a significant part of our offense, and he needs to be focused. There’s a bit of immaturity coming through.” He added that this incident put Volpe in a difficult position, as the team relies heavily on Chisholm’s presence in the lineup.

After the game, Chisholm chose not to address the media. The loss marked a tough moment for the Yankees, who are currently facing a competitive landscape in the AL East, with the Rays recently beating them and the Red Sox extending their winning streak.

Throughout this season, Chisholm has found it challenging to achieve his target of becoming a 50-50 player, with his current stats showing a .223 batting average, 12 home runs, and 24 stolen bases over 80 games. This year has also seen some unusual missteps, like Boone reprimanding him for snacking while playing and Chisholm admitting unfamiliarity with certain MLB rules.

As the Yankees navigate their season without stars like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, Boone emphasized the importance of Chisholm’s contributions during this crucial time. “He’s been decent the past few months, but I believe there’s more potential in him,” Boone mentioned. “We’re just waiting for him to really step up and make a significant impact.” It seems the team is hopeful for a stronger performance as they continue their campaign.
