Luigi Mangione’s federal trial rescheduled for January 2027

Luigi Mangione’s Trial Delayed Until January 2027

Luigi Mangione, who faces charges for the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan back in December 2024, will now have his federal trial postponed until January 2027.

In a brief 20-minute session at the Manhattan federal courthouse on Monday, the 28-year-old Mangione appeared in khaki jail scrubs to discuss jury selection and scheduling.

U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett officially confirmed the new trial date, admitting that her earlier aspirations for holding the trial this fall were “undue optimism.”

“As you know, I had hoped with perhaps undue optimism to preserve a possibility of a fall trial in this case,” Garnett remarked. “I’m going to adjourn the trial to our previously agreed backup date.”

The change in schedule comes after Mangione’s state trial was also pushed back from June to September at the request of his defense. Garnett pointed out that the overlap in trial dates would not allow Mangione’s legal team enough time to engage effectively in jury selection for the federal trial.

The indictment against Mangione in New York includes several charges:

  • First-degree murder
  • Second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism
  • Second-degree intentional murder
  • Two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Four counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • One count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • One count of criminal possession of a forged instrument

In his federal case, the charges are:

  • Two counts of interstate stalking
  • Murder through use of a firearm
  • A firearms offense related to using a firearm during a crime of violence

A federal judge dismissed two counts of murder through use of a firearm in January, which means the two stalking counts remain active while prosecutors are unable to pursue the death penalty.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both the state and federal cases.

“Whether we like it or not, we are somewhat at the mercy of events in the state case,” Garnett commented, noting that outcomes in the state trial would “inevitably” influence the federal trial’s structure to ensure fairness for the defendant.

Jury selection for the upcoming federal trial is slated to commence on January 5, 2027, with opening statements set for January 25, 2027. If convicted, Mangione could potentially face a life sentence in either the state or federal trial.
