Upcoming Hearing for Charlie Kirk’s Alleged Assassin

Charlie Kirk’s parents and his widow, Erica Kirk, are expected to be present at Tyler Robinson’s preliminary hearing in Utah next week. This marks a significant moment for Kirk’s family, as it will be their first court appearance since Robinson’s arrest following the tragic event.

Robinson, aged 22, is alleged to have fatally shot Kirk during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University back on September 10, 2025. As of now, he has not been formally arraigned, and while Kirk’s family will attend, they are not expected to make any public statements.

The preliminary hearing is set to last a full week, concluding on July 6. Prosecutors will present witnesses to establish probable cause for the case against Robinson, which, if successful, could lead to a trial. However, the hearing might face delays as the Utah Supreme Court deliberates over a defense appeal regarding the media’s presence in the courtroom—a motion that Erica Kirk has opposed.

A decision from the state Supreme Court is anticipated soon. Sources indicate that this preliminary hearing will be an emotionally charged moment for the family. In the aftermath of Kirk’s death, videos of the incident circulated widely online, and similar footage is anticipated to be shown in court. Both sides have agreed to give families a chance to leave the courtroom before any distressing evidence is presented.

Robinson could potentially face the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder, along with several other lesser charges like weapon offenses and witness tampering. It’s worth noting that during a preliminary hearing, hearsay can be used as testimony, which allows prosecutors to play video statements instead of putting certain witnesses on the stand.

According to court records, Robinson reportedly confessed to the assassination in communications with a witness and left behind notes in their shared living space. Allegedly, one of these notes read, “I had an opportunity to take Charlie Kirk out and I’m going to take it.” Investigators later found the suspected murder weapon, a rifle, hidden near the university.

Robinson’s girlfriend has been cooperating with authorities and has not been charged with any crime. Meanwhile, Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two and founder of the conservative group Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck during a lecture tour when tragedy struck.

Last week, the judge ruled that some protocols had been breached by prosecutors concerning a gag order but rejected a defense motion regarding the death penalty before the trial.
