DOJ Renames Environment Division to Align with Energy Goals

The Department of Justice (DOJ) in the U.S. is changing the name of the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) to the Energy and Natural Resources Division. This shift, announced on Monday, aims to align more closely with the Trump administration’s vision for U.S. energy.

In a press release, the DOJ noted that the division’s “recent victories” support various executive orders from President Donald Trump.

“ENERGY AND THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT: The Environment and Natural Resources Division will now be renamed the ENERGY and Natural Resources Division,” the DOJ tweeted recently. They added, “The administration’s work to unleash American energy has drawn legal attacks by special interest groups.”

The Energy Department has been instrumental in promoting U.S. energy independence, playing a major role by issuing emergency orders to keep power plants operational and reopening California’s Sable pipeline.

According to the department, “ENRD’s work to unleash American energy does not diminish its defense of the environment.” They highlighted recent actions aimed at protecting public health, along with what ENRD Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson referred to as “our nation’s greatest natural resource.”

For instance, the division achieved a significant $100 million air pollution penalty against a coke plant located near Detroit. Additionally, they secured an 18-month prison sentence for biofuel fraud and a $500,000 penalty related to asbestos violations.

“Energy security is national security. Iran’s recent hold on the global oil market emphasizes the necessity of domestic energy production to preserve our way of life and ensure our prosperity,” Gustafson mentioned. He noted that for the past two decades, the division has been vital in the responsible production and use of energy, driven by advancements in technology from the shale revolution to artificial intelligence. To reflect this evolution, the division will now be rebranded as the Energy and Natural Resources Division.”

The origins of the division date back to 1909, when Attorney General George Wickersham established the Public Lands Division to address federal public lands and Native American affairs. It was renamed in 1933 to reflect its expanded mission beyond just public land, particularly after acquiring additional territory during the New Deal and World War II.
