Warriors Extend Contract with Kristaps Porzingis
The Golden State Warriors and center Kristaps Porzingis have reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension worth $40 million. This news comes from ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania and Porzingis’ agent, Jeff Schwartz.
According to Charania, the deal includes a player option after the second year, potentially allowing Porzingis to enter free agency following the 2026-2027 season.
This latest extension follows Porzingis’ trade to the Warriors from the Atlanta Hawks at last season’s trade deadline. It’s worth noting that he faced several health challenges last season, managing to play in only 32 games due to various issues, including an Achilles tendon and right ankle injury.
During his time with the Celtics prior to this trade, he was diagnosed by team doctors with a condition called veloorthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which leads to symptoms like increased heart rate, dizziness, and fatigue.
When he did take the court, Porzingis averaged 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. The Warriors narrowly made it into the play-in tournament for the playoffs last season.
In one of his standout performances, Porzingis played 28 minutes in a 126-121 win over the Los Angeles Clippers, shooting 8-for-12 from the field and hitting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. He wrapped up that game with 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
The Warriors’ playoff run ended with a loss to the Phoenix Suns on April 17, where Porzingis played 15 minutes and did not see action in the fourth quarter.
There’s been some buzz lately about the Warriors possibly pursuing LeBron James this offseason, along with former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis. Additionally, reports emerged that Draymond Green has opted out of his $27.7 million player option to allow for more financial flexibility for the team.
