Naomi Osaka’s Unique Style Shines at Wimbledon
While Wimbledon has a strict all-white dress code for players, Naomi Osaka isn’t letting tradition stifle her flair for fashion.
At the British Tennis Open on Monday, she made a memorable entrance in a Yagihana outfit before her match at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London. The piece, crafted by Tokyo designer Hana Yagi, draws from traditional Japanese formal attire. It features a wrap-like silhouette and a wide obi belt, with a mid-thigh opaque fabric adorned with delicate sheer ruffles cascading to the floor.
Her all-white ensemble adhered to Wimbledon’s dress standards and was embellished with embroidered cranes and cherry blossoms, reflecting a rich cultural aesthetic.
Osaka styled her hair neatly atop her head, accentuated with white flowers. For jewelry, she chose pieces from the Japanese brand Mikimoto, including diamond and pearl drop earrings valued at around $6,000, as well as matching bangles priced at $16,000 each.
She also shared glimpses of her outfit on social media, noting that the inspiration came from Lucy Liu’s character in “Kill Bill,” playfully captioning her post with “Stupid bunny.”
In an interview, Osaka expressed her desire to use fashion as a way to tell stories, saying, “Every time I go out for a walk, it’s an opportunity to bring people into my creative world. The fact that people are interested in fashion and excited to see what’s next is also really great.”
Her stylist, Marty Harper, emphasized the importance of ceremony in sports, remarking, “This is one of the few places in sports where the ceremony still feels like an integral part of the competition.” The team drew inspiration from vintage Shiromuku bridal gowns and antique kimonos while creating the outfit.
As she prepared for her match, Osaka changed from her eye-catching walk-out attire into a sporty white Nike look underneath. Known for her bold fashion choices, she previously dazzled at the French Open with sequins and frills, and even wore a jellyfish-themed outfit inspired by her daughter during the Australian Open. Fans are eagerly anticipating what she’ll reveal next as the tournament unfolds.
