Esmil Bajraktavic Set to Face U.S. in World Cup Opener

Wisconsin’s own Esmil Bajraktavic is gearing up to compete against the United States in the first round of the World Cup finals this Wednesday.

The 21-year-old made a significant switch in 2024, moving from the international federation to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina, the birthplace of his parents. This decision came amid some uncertainties over coaching changes within the U.S. team, as noted by former coach Shan Amini.

Bajraktavic quickly became a household name in Bosnia after he scored the pivotal penalty that led his team to victory over Italy, securing their spot in the prestigious tournament.

Amini, who coached him for five years at SC Wave, trusts that the Appleton, Wisconsin native is ready for this momentous challenge. “This is his opportunity to truly represent the country he grew up in,” Amini shared. “He’s eager for that level of competition, and I expect a fantastic performance from him.”

As Bosnia makes its debut in the knockout stages, this will mark their seventh match in World Cup history. Bajraktavic faces a tough road ahead if he hopes to navigate into the round of 16, but Amini is optimistic that his confidence will help stave off any nerves.

Amini praised Bajraktavic, calling him “the best player” and claiming, “I’ve never seen a player from Wisconsin like this before,” highlighting the winger’s extraordinary abilities.

Amini is also confident that competing in the United States will benefit Bajraktavic. He reflects on the player’s youth career, spent traveling the country with SC Wave and MLS Academy teams, suggesting he is familiar with the environment and will be at ease.

“I know he’s a natural leader, helping his teammates adjust,” Amini remarked. “He’ll feel right at home, and that should help everyone relax.”

Of course, playing in front of family and friends adds another layer of significance to the game for Bajraktavic. Yet, regardless of the match’s outcome, Amini believes this experience could be pivotal for him, particularly as someone who grew up in America.

There was a time when Amini feared Bajraktavic might fade into obscurity after heading to Europe, but with the spotlight on this game, this worry seems misplaced—especially if it draws significant viewership across both nations.
