Socialist Democratic Party deepens rift within the party in 2026 primaries
Tiffany Smiley and Richard Fowler examined the growing influence of socialism within the Democratic Party, particularly focusing on the Colorado primary and candidates linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). They reflected on how these DSA-affiliated candidates might be affecting party unity and whether their policies could be linked to a rise in crime in urban areas.
In a surprising turn of events, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser defeated Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) in the Democratic primary for governor. This victory halted Bennet’s ambitions to transition from the Senate to the governor’s mansion, making Weiser a frontrunner to succeed term-limited Democratic Governor Jared Polis.
Weiser’s win over three-term senator Bennet, who also ran for president in 2020, marked a significant upset in one of the most closely watched Democratic primaries this year. In states where Democrats have had a strong showing in recent elections, the primary winner typically enjoys an advantage come November.
The outcome also suggests that Bennet will remain in the Senate, which might prevent a contentious battle to fill his seat had he secured the governorship.
“Phil has dedicated his life to law, justice, and public service,” says Weiser’s campaign site. “As Governor, he will continue to uphold the rule of law, protect our democracy, and ensure justice for every Coloradan.”
The primary saw Bennet, a well-known figure with considerable backing from Colorado’s Democratic establishment, face challenging competition from Weiser and other prominent Colorado Democrats. Notably, Bennet had endorsements from over 200 local leaders, including U.S. Senators and Representatives, as well as significant labor organizations.
Weiser’s campaign, in contrast, garnered support from former state leaders and local officials, emphasizing his experience as attorney general throughout his campaign.
While Bennet attempted to frame himself as more capable of opposing Trump and pushing his agenda as governor, Weiser focused on his established legal background and public service.
As results came in on Tuesday, it appeared that Barb Kirkmeyer was in the lead for the Republican primary for governor. This suggests a challenging contest ahead for whichever Republican candidate faces Weiser in the general election.
