Knicks’ Title Journey Includes Everyone on Roster
Winning the NBA title was truly a team effort for the Knicks, with contributions coming from every player, even those who didn’t step onto the court during the playoffs.
Head coach Mike Brown highlighted the importance of forward Dillon Jones in the team’s playoff preparations, despite Jones having played only seven games in the regular season.
“Throughout this process, I’ve received support and messages from different people,” Brown shared during a recent appearance on “The Roommate Show.” “I mean, Dillon was fantastic.”
Interestingly, most fans were only made aware of Jones’ presence on the team when a sign mistakenly displaying his name alongside Patrick Ewing’s legendary number 33 appeared outside City Hall.
At 24 years old, Jones clocked in just 39 minutes of playtime for New York. Yet, his previous experience proved to be a significant asset. After being drafted 26th overall, he spent the previous season with the Thunder, who managed to win the NBA Finals by besting the Pacers in a seven-game series.
Brown noted that he often consulted Jones during the Knicks’ playoff journey, given his recent playoff experience with Oklahoma City. “I would ask him about their strategies and how they handled certain moments,” Brown explained.
This year marked Brown’s first as head coach for the Knicks, and his emphasis on teamwork and communication resulted in an impressive 13-game postseason winning streak, culminating in the franchise’s first championship in over five decades.
One of the most effective strategies suggested by Jones involved forcing the Knicks to confront their disappointing postseason history. Before facing the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, Brown had the video team create a film illustrating player reactions to last year’s loss against the Pacers.
“He wanted to invoke memories of that tough loss for the players,” Brown clarified, emphasizing that it was Jones’ idea to craft a visual aid to resonate with the team.
As the Knicks prepare for free agency, they’ve already secured deals to re-sign essential players Landry Shamet and Mohamed Diawara. However, a return for Mitchell Robinson seems uncertain as the team aims to remain financially prudent.
As for Jones, his role in the upcoming season is still up in the air, but having a two-time NBA champion on the roster can only be a positive thing.
