Kamala Harris creates alliance with NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Kamala Harris has recently worked to enhance her ties with New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, engaging in an extensive personal phone call. This conversation, which occurred last week, set the stage for what is likely to be an ongoing dialogue between them.

According to a report, the discussion revolved around the party’s future, with insights indicating that candidates are navigating uncertain terrain regarding pro-Palestinian rights—a lane they recognize exists, yet they’re unsure how to approach it.

One analyst commented on the potential risks involved, noting that while this shift may be seen as precarious, it alters the dynamic between the two figures. They believe that taking action is preferable to inaction at this stage.

Harris’ initiative comes shortly after candidates from the Democratic Socialists, endorsed by Mamdani, secured victories in three New York congressional primaries, further solidifying his influence within the Democratic Party.

This outreach seems part of Harris’s broader strategy to reconnect with progressive factions, especially those dissatisfied with the Biden administration’s approach to the ongoing Gaza conflict.

She had previously held back her endorsement in the mayoral race until after the primaries. Upon Mamdani’s nomination, she extended a measured endorsement during the campaign, indicating her support for the Democratic Party without pinpointing specific individuals.

Harris has dedicated months to meeting privately with left-leaning activists, including members of the pro-Palestinian movement and longstanding Democratic contributors. In these conversations, she expressed a desire for the U.S. not to fund actions that cause civilian harm or damage communities.

One activist underscored that she asked to hear personal accounts from voters who lost family members due to U.S.-supported Israeli airstrikes.

Mamdani is recognized for his outspoken stance against Israel, often characterizing its policies towards Palestinians as akin to apartheid.

This new advocacy approach marks a significant change for Harris, who faced challenges in retaining the support of Arab Americans and progressives during the 2024 presidential campaign, partly due to her failure to distance herself from Biden’s unwavering support of Israel amid the Gaza conflict.

Meanwhile, candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists continue to make strides across the nation. In New York City, for instance, several entrenched Democratic incumbents were recently defeated.

The same trend is observable elsewhere, like in Los Angeles, where a council member is running against the mayor. In Washington, D.C., a DSA member won the Democratic primary for mayor, and in Colorado, a young candidate is vying to be the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress, challenging an incumbent.

Harris’s latest moves reflect a shifting landscape within the Democratic Party and the increasing rifts among its members, as highlighted by commentators.

It’s reported that she currently holds a strong position, remaining the frontrunner among Democratic voters for the 2028 presidential nomination. Despite some declines in her approval ratings, she still leads significantly compared to other potential candidates.

Other Democrats are also reconsidering their stances on Israel, as divisions within the party become more evident. For example, California Governor Gavin Newsom has labeled Israel as an “apartheid state” before backtracking while still expressing his support for Israel.

Neither Harris nor Mamdani’s representatives have commented on the private conversation, and Mamdani has built a reputation for his forthright criticism regarding Israeli policies and his backing of movements like BDS.
