Until July 4th, the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream is showcasing U.S. citizens discussing what the 2026 American Dream means to them. One notable voice is Rosario Marin, who served as the 41st Secretary of the Treasury. Marin, appointed by President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2003, is historically the only foreign-born treasurer in U.S. history.
The American Dream—it’s more than just a concept; it rings true for so many.
I was born in Mexico City. At the time, I thought we were doing well. But after arriving here, I realized, “Oh, we were actually quite poor.” That reality drove us to seek better opportunities in the United States.
Education, I discovered, was my path to seizing those opportunities. While I finished high school, I didn’t even go to my graduation ceremony. I later earned my bachelor’s degree in business administration, focusing on marketing and international business.
Funny enough, I never expected my life to take such a dramatic turn, eventually leading me to the role of U.S. Treasurer.
In one of my favorite quotes from Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, he says, “What is behind you and what is in front of you is nothing compared to what is within you.” I’ve held that close. Life can be challenging, but being present here makes you stronger. Whatever lies ahead, you can rise above it.
That sums up my journey.
Consider this: a 14-year-old immigrant kid who couldn’t even speak English when I got here ended up becoming America’s 41st treasurer. That’s the essence of the American dream.
I genuinely believe that with hard work and faith, you can achieve your dreams, no matter how unattainable they might seem. Just look at my story.
