DHS Has Detained 10,000 Unauthorized Migrants This Week

DHS Provides Updates on Ongoing Arrests of Criminal Illegal Immigrants in Minnesota

DHS Reports Surge in Arrests of Illegal Immigrants

The Department of Homeland Security has announced a notable increase in its enforcement activities, with the rate of daily arrests for illegal immigrants now reaching 2,000. According to reports, federal immigration authorities have detained over 10,000 individuals since last Friday.

This sudden uptick in arrests seems to be a directive from the White House, targeting specific individuals, including those who have already received orders to leave the country from judges. It was noted that ICE officials were informed of the demand for more arrests, but the duration of this heightened pace remains uncertain. Apparently, the new norm will see 2,000 arrests daily.

Just recently, ICE launched a concentrated effort to boost the number of arrests, peaking on Saturday with over 2,400 detainees in custody. The overall count of individuals held in ICE facilities surged by almost 4,000, surpassing 63,000 as of Tuesday.

Interestingly, Markwayne Mullin, the agency’s chief, has not commented extensively on this arrest initiative. However, he did suggest that the deportations within the next few weeks could surpass those conducted over the past 25 years. There’s a firm belief that the agency will meet this goal within two months if the current rate continues.

With increased staffing, detention capacity, and legal resources, the agency is now positioned to arrest and deport a higher number of immigrants. They have also achieved several legal victories and implemented various procedural improvements to expedite the process.

If maintained, this intensified campaign could lead to annual deportations exceeding one million, especially as more migrants might respond to the detention of family members by returning home. It’s worth considering that if the country does indeed host around 14 million undocumented immigrants, the effects could be even broader. Other agencies might take steps to invalidate illegal immigrants’ access to bank accounts, work permits, and other essentials.

In relation to job markets, this exertion by DHS could push employers towards hiring more American workers and possibly increasing wages ahead of the November elections. Yet, it’s surprising to see rent prices decreasing across the country as federal efforts send more immigrants home.

On the flip side, experts caution that the current push may not last indefinitely. Two unnamed U.S. officials indicated that ICE leaders are being asked to keep as many officers as possible on duty every day, with a significant portion of them focused on arrest operations.

Such a strategy helps clarify the recent media reports about arrests in various states, including Texas, Florida, and Wisconsin. For instance, a federal raid at a manufacturing plant in Birmingham, Alabama resulted in over 30 arrests as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, centered on identity fraud and illegal employment practices.

The campaign is expected to target more than just the agricultural sector, also affecting many restaurants and other businesses critical to the economy. However, there seems to be little indication of a crackdown on the visa-dependent white-collar sector, where issues of fraud and discrimination continue to persist.

In addition, social media has seen an uptick in videos showcasing arrests, painting a stark picture of the current enforcement environment.
