Rams Legend Leroy Irvin Passes Away at 68

Leroy Irvin, a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback for the Los Angeles Rams, has died at the age of 68.

Eric Dickerson, a former teammate and Hall of Fame running back, shared the news on Instagram, expressing his devastation over Irvin’s passing.

Journalist Eric Geller mentioned that Irvin had been fighting throat cancer, but no further details about his death have been disclosed.

“Leroy wasn’t just a lockdown corner or a fierce competitor on the field,” Dickerson stated. “He was a true friend and a great guy who always brought incredible energy. Rest in peace my brother. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Irvin family and all of Rams Nation.”

Irvin was drafted by the Rams in 1980 from Kansas State and played with them for a decade. He spent one season with the Detroit Lions at the end of his career.

Irvin made a name for himself, earning Pro Bowl honors in 1985 and 1986, and received All-Pro selections during his career. In 1981, he recorded his first professional sack and ended that season with three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 16 games.

His knack for big plays was evident; during the 1984 season, he snagged five interceptions, scoring two touchdowns from them, which placed him among the leaders in interception returns. By this time, he was already establishing himself as one of the standout players for the Rams.

The Rams also released a statement mourning Irvin, expressing condolences to his family and friends during this tough time. Over the course of his career, Irvin tallied 34 interceptions, five touchdown returns, nine forced fumbles, and 13 fumble recoveries.
