Bass Pro Shops to Open New Store in La Mesa, California
Bass Pro Shops is set to open a large outdoor retail space in Southern California. The company announced plans for a 148,000-square-foot store located in Grossmont Center, with an opening slated for 2028.
Legendary angler and conservationist Johnny Morris expressed excitement, noting, “We are thrilled to serve the great anglers and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the San Diego region.”
The new location will cater to a variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, camping, and hunting. Morris emphasized the area’s unique offerings, saying, “With access to both saltwater and freshwater fishing, this area has something truly special. We’re looking forward to helping families and friends enjoy it.”
This new store promises an experience designed to reflect the outdoor heritage of the region, which should appeal to shoppers. The retailer also mentioned it would create over 150 jobs locally, garnering a positive response from La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostasis.
“This announcement marks another exciting milestone in the ongoing transformation of the Grossmont Center,” he stated. He added that the new store would attract visitors from across the region, bolstering the local economy.
The La Mesa store will be the sixth Bass Pro Shops location in California, marking growth since the first store opened in 2007. Earlier this year, the brand was recognized as “America’s Most Trusted Outdoor Retailer” for five consecutive years.
Bass Pro Shops has a storied history, launched in 1972 when Morris began selling tackle from his father’s liquor store in Springfield, Missouri. The company has since expanded to nearly 200 locations across North America.
Notably, this announcement comes following the closure of several significant retailers at the outdoor shopping complex. Last month, Reading Cinemas revealed it would shutter its location, which had been part of the center since 2008. Additionally, Macy’s announced it would cease operations there due to poor sales.
