Caitlin Clark’s WNBA Journey Continues

This week, Caitlin Clark once again found herself at the center of attention during WNBA games. Interestingly, she didn’t need to make any controversial moves this time around.

Yet, curiously, the situation somehow stings more.

According to her teammates, Clark is rated as the 11th best guard in the league. Yes, you heard that right. The 24-year-old was named a starter for the All-Star Game scheduled for July 25, although the voting results from fans, media, and players have sparked some debate.

WNBA seems to prefer narratives that don’t feature Caitlin Clark, yet her popularity keeps boosting TV ratings.

In fan votes, Clark placed as the second-best guard, just behind Paige Bueckers. That assessment feels fair.

The media ranked her third, which also seems reasonable. Yet, astonishingly, her fellow players put her at 11th, an improvement from last year’s 9th place.

In the voting process, fans have a significant influence, accounting for 50% of the votes, while players and media each contribute 25%.

What a time to be following this sport:

It’s obvious the WNBA has a complicated relationship with Caitlin Clark

This situation is truly fascinating, and to be honest, I’ve been covering sports for over a decade and haven’t seen anything quite like it.

The sentiment against her is palpable. It’s puzzling—given that she has contributed to making women in the league wealthier. It’s often said that a rising tide lifts all boats, right?

Apparently not in this case.

There’s simply no reality where Caitlin Clark deserves the title of the 11th best guard in the WNBA. That simply can’t be true.

Caitlin Clark recently broke the WNBA assist record, only to get booed during her celebration.

I watched that game, and it was challenging viewing. Honestly, a lot of the league’s performance leaves much to be desired. Sometimes, I think Angel Reese gets lucky, as she misses easy shots during crucial moments. I’m certainly not trying to throw shade, but some of her plays are so off that you’d think they were generated by artificial intelligence.

Now, I get that they don’t share the same playing position. Sure. But it’s just a feeling; I find watching Clark much more engaging than many others in the league. It’s this uniqueness that makes her such a polarizing figure. Interestingly, she’s having a solid season, especially given that she spent a good chunk of last year dealing with injuries.

Currently, Clark ranks second in the WNBA for assists per game with 8.2, and she’s tied for fourth in scoring with an average of 21.2 points. I’m no basketball expert, but those metrics seem pretty crucial for a guard, right?

Essentially, a guard’s role involves scoring and facilitating plays. Clark excels in both areas, so it’s bewildering that her peers have voted her to 11th place.

Jealousy seems rampant in the league. Every week, there’s a new story; just last week, Alyssa Thomas took a hit.

If this situation doesn’t say everything you need to know, I don’t know what does. Seriously, open your eyes!

It’s clearer than ever.
